RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – The Great American Conference released its coaches poll on Wednesday afternoon for the 2023 baseball season and Arkansas-Monticello was voted to finish in seventh, receiving 68 total points in the preseason ranking.
On top of the preseason favorites was Southern Arkansas, which received 120 total points and 10 of the 12 first-place votes, was tabbed the league's favorite for the 2023 season. Henderson State, which was voted to finish in second, received 107 total points and a single first-place vote. Oklahoma Baptist was voted third, tallying 98 total points and receiving the final first-place vote. Southeastern Oklahoma State was voted fourth and Ouachita Baptist heads into the season with a fifth place vote to round out the conference's top five.
UAM was 23-24 overall and 17-16 in conference play before being eliminated by Harding in the 2022 GAC Tournament.
Weevils head coach John Harvey enters his thirteenth season leading the Weevils. Associate Head Coach Mark Jelks also returns for his ninth season with the Boll Weevils baseball program.
The Weevils bring back two of their top hitters from a squad that scored 318 runs in 47 games of the 2022 season. Chase Cripps and Cade Thompson paced the offense, each hitting over a .350 average with 68 and 66 hits when the season came to end in the conference tournament. Thompson also led the Weevils in home runs with 12 on the year.
UAM also brings back its top two starting pitchers – Derek Potts and Mason Philley. Potts posted a 6-5 record with a 4.67 ERA. Potts had a .234 batting averages against him by hitters, ranking 5th among all GAC pitchers. Philley ranked 3rd among GAC pitchers with a .217 average against him. Potts and Philley also struck out 91 and 82 batters in the 2022 season to rank 2nd and 4th among GAC pitchers.
The Weevils open the 2023 season with a trip to Clinton, Mississippi for a three-game series against Mississippi College.
