WEATHERFORD, Okla. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello volleyball team continued Great American Conference play Thursday afternoon, traveling to Weatherford, Oklahoma, to face Southwestern Oklahoma State University inside the Pioneer Event Center. The Boll Weevils battled the Bulldogs through four sets before falling (19-25, 25-23, 13-25, 13-25).
FIRST SET (25-19 SWOSU, SWOSU leads 1-0)
Arkansas-Monticello opened the first set strong, trading points with Southwestern Oklahoma State before taking an early 10-7 lead.
Isabella Garcia and
Sophia Grubbs helped lead the Weevils' offense with multiple kills, while
Kylie Miller,
Jalen Scroggins, and
Summer Stephens contributed at the net. The Bulldogs battled back to tie the set at 15-15 before the teams continued exchanging points. A kill from
Ella Cline and a block by Miller and Scroggins gave UAM an 18-17 advantage. However, Southwestern Oklahoma State responded with a scoring run to regain control. Despite a late block from Miller and Scroggins, the Bulldogs closed out the opening set with a 25-19 victory.
SECOND SET (25-23 UAM, Match tied 1-1)
Arkansas-Monticello came out strong in the second set, taking an early 3-0 lead behind a kill from
Kylie Miller and back-to-back service aces from
Ella Cline. The Bulldogs fought back to tie the score at 8-8, but the Weevils regained control with kills from
Summer Stephens,
Sophia Grubbs, and
Jalen Scroggins to build a 14-10 advantage.
Isabella Garcia helped extend UAM's lead to 19-16 before Grubbs delivered back-to-back kills to put the Weevils ahead 21-18. Southwestern Oklahoma State rallied to tie the set at 22-22, but UAM responded with two points to reach set point. After the Bulldogs cut the lead to one, Scroggins delivered the final kill to secure a 25-23 victory and even the match at 1-1.
THIRD SET (25-13 SWOSU, SWOSU leads 2-1)
Southwestern Oklahoma State opened the third set with an early lead, but Arkansas-Monticello battled to keep the score close. Kills from Sophia Grubbs, Isabella Garcia, and Jalen Scroggins helped the Weevils tie the set at 4-4. The Bulldogs responded with a scoring run to take a 12-7 advantage before extending their lead to 16-8. Ella Cline and Grubbs added kills as UAM continued to fight back, but Southwestern Oklahoma State maintained control down the stretch. Summer Stephens delivered a late kill for the Weevils before the Bulldogs closed out the third set with a 25-13 victory.
FOURTH SET (25-13 SWOSU, SWOSU wins 3-1)
The Bulldogs gained momentum early in the fourth set, jumping ahead 8-3 despite kills from Isabella Garcia and Kylie Miller. Southwestern Oklahoma State continued to build its lead, pulling ahead 14-5. Ella Cline sparked a brief response for the Weevils with a kill, followed by a service ace from Allyson Rosa and another kill from Garcia. UAM continued to push offensively, with Sophia Grubbs and Jalen Scroggins finding success at the net. Shayla Lacamiento added a late kill, but the Bulldogs sealed the 25-13 set victory to take the match, 3-1.
