COTTON BLOSSOMS SNAP FOUR-GAME LOSING SKID

MONTICELLO – The University of Arkansas at Monticello women’s basketball team snapped a four-game losing streak with a 72-57 win over Southern Arkansas at home on Saturday.
 
The Cotton Blossoms (8-10, 2-4 GSC-West) improved upon their season-low shooting percentage in the most recent loss to Harding by almost 10 points in the win over the Lady Muleriders (6-13, 1-6 GSC-West), but the most significant improvement was only committing 12 turnovers combined. Prior to Saturday’s win over SAU, the Cotton Blossoms were averaging close to 23 turnovers per contest.
 
UAM made 29-of-82 shots from the field (35.4 percent), 3-of-21 three-pointers (14.3 percent) and 11-of-26 free-throw attempts (42.3 percent). The Cotton Blossoms won the rebound battle by close to double-figures with a final margin of 48-39.
 
Individually, redshirt freshman Erica Williams collected a season-high of 17 points after making 7-of-16 shots from the field and 3-of-6 foul shots. The Elgin, Texas native also added seven rebounds, two assists and two steals to her final totals.
 
Sophomore Taylor Clark also reached double-figures with 11 points after making 4-of-7 field goals and 3-of-5 foul shots. Clark also racked up seven rebounds in the win. Senior Yelitza Rivera led all players with eight rebounds.
 
The Lady Muleriders made 21-of-45 shots from the field (46.7 percent), 2-of-9 three-pointers (22.2 percent) and 13-of-23 foul shots (56.5 percent). SAU committed 28 turnovers and only recorded 10 assists.
 
SAU’s Kmaria Hobbs led all scorers in the contest with 29 points after making 10-of-16 field goal shots and 9-of-13 foul shots. Shanece Black was the next highest scorer for SAU with seven points.
 
The Cotton Blossoms finish up their three-game home stand this Thursday, February 4 against Christian Brothers. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. inside Steelman Field House.
