Junior Nick Carey made two
three-pointers and scored 10
points in overtime to lead the
University of Arkansas at
Monticello men’s basketball team
to a thrilling 62-56 win over
Harding at home inside Steelman
Field House.
Carey scored
10 of UAM’s 13 points in the
extra period with a pair of
treys and four foul shots.
During regulation, the Baton
Rouge, La. native was 4-of-14
for eight points, but finished
the game 6-of-16 with a
game-high 18 points to help his
team to a three-game win streak,
all in Gulf South Conference
play. UAM has won five of their
last six contests.
Junior Derrick Robinson recorded
his first career double-double
in the win with 13 points and 10
rebounds. Senior Anthony Lacey
was the other Boll Weevil to
reach double-figures in scoring
with 11 points after making
4-of-6 field goals. Senior Chris
Paige reached double-figures in
rebounding with 11 boards, six
of which came from the offensive
glass.
As a team,
UAM (9-6, 4-1 GSC-West) easily
won the rebound battle by a
final margin of 56-30. Of those
56, the Boll Weevils had 22
offensive boards.
UAM finished
the game shooting 33.9 percent
from the field (20-of-59), 28
percent from three-point range
(7-of-25) and 57.7 percent from
the free-throw line (15-of-26).
The Bisons
(8-9, 1-4 GSC-West) held UAM’s
leading scorer and GSC-West
Player of the Week Jarrell
Turner to only five points and
seven rebounds. Turner was
1-of-11 from the floor and
3-of-4 from the charity stripe
in 44 minutes of action. He
fouled out with 16 seconds left
in the overtime period.
Individually
for the Bisons, Kevin Brown led
the team with 13 points, while
teammate Stephen Blake also
reached double-figures with 11
points.
The Boll
Weevils have arguably their
toughest test all season next on
the schedule. The team travels
to Russellville, Ark. this
upcoming Thursday, January 28 to
face undefeated and nationally
top-ranked Arkansas Tech. The
Wonder Boys defeated Delta State
88-77 Saturday in Russellville.
Tipoff is set
for approximately 7:30 p.m. at
Tucker Coliseum on the ATU
campus.
