LOCKWOOD, KNAPP EARN GSC ACADEMIC HONORS; 27 MAKE HONOR ROLL
January 22, 2010
Contact: Brian Ramsey, Sports Information Director

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Junior football player Joseph Lockwood and senior volleyball player Cayla Knapp have been selected to the 2009 Fall Gulf South Conference All-Academic Team in addition to joining a crew of 27 UAM student-athletes to earn spots on the GSC Fall Academic Honor Roll.

Lockwood (Stuttgart, Ark.) has academic credentials that make him eligible for this honor every year, but this past season he made an impact on the football gridiron as well. After spending his first two seasons at UAM in the defensive secondary, he made the switch to wide receiver for the 2009 campaign and finished the season ranked second on the team in every pass-receiving category except yards per catch.

The 6-2 wide out caught a total of 35 passes for 478 receiving yards and added four touchdown catches. He averaged 13.7 yards per reception and 43.5 yards per game. He also had four carries for 33 rushing yards, including a 15-yard rush on UAM’s first offensive play of the season against Tarleton State.

In the classroom, Lockwood is a perfect 4.0 student. He is in his third year in two of the more challenging academic majors the institution has to offer. He is a double major of biology, with an emphasis in pre-medicine, and in chemistry with an emphasis in biochemistry. He also serves as vice president of the UAM Alpha Chi Honor Society.

Earlier this season, Lockwood was named to the 2009 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Football Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Knapp (South Lake Tahoe, Calif.) earns the honor after a standout senior season for the Cotton Blossom volleyball team that earned her All-GSC West First Team accolades.

Throughout the season, she totaled 250 kills for an average of 2.17 per set, a team-high 41 service aces, 111 digs and 75 total blocks, including a team-high 36 block solos. In a 3-2 win over Christian Brothers at home, Knapp tied teammate Mallory Storm in breaking a UAM single-match record with seven block solos.

In the classroom, Knapp sports a 3.38 cumulative grade point average and is majoring in physical therapy.

Knapp and Lockwood are a part of 27 UAM student-athletes on the Fall GSC Honor Roll, consisting off all participants in fall sports having a 3.0 cumulative GPA or better.
